DOG-A-THON: 4 NOVEMBER 2006

INTRODUCTION

The Ladysmith Dog-a-Thon is an annual event that was first introduced three years ago. The event has shown continual growth in this time and the event for 2006 promise to be the biggest ever. The organizers are busy promoting the event to local schools and early indications are that large number of school children will partake with their dogs. The Dog-A Thon is open to all members of the public with their dogs. Entrants without dogs may also partake.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ANNUAL DOG-A-THON

Public awareness: the greatest breakthrough in any society is a common consciousness regarding the welfare of animals. The Dog-A-Thon will allow the issue of animal care to be brought home in a fun way.
Education: The Dog-A-Thon will provide a platform where general information regarding the Animal Anti Cruelty League as well as general pet care can be communicated to the public at large.
Outreach: Invitations are also extended to the outlining settlements around Ladysmith. Schools from Ezakheni and other areas will be encouraged to partake to involve theses communities in the fight against animal cruelty.
Social: To provide a fun family event that promotes social interaction between the residents of Ladysmith and their dogs.
Fundraising: The event will raise income for the Animal Anti Cruelly League through the entrant fees and selling of refreshments.

VENUE AND ROUTE


The Dog-a-Thon will start the Ladysmith Town Hall at 7h00 on Saturday morning. The Honorable Mayor of Ladysmith has been invited to start the race with all the entrants. The route will follow Murchison Street to the intersection at Convent & Egerton Roads. There will be a watering point for the dogs at the MOTH Hall. The route will divert into Egerton Road and will finish on the Egerton Primary School Agar Sportsfield. The total distance of the route is 1.9 km.

PROGRAMME

6h00 - 7h00 Registration on open area in front of Town Hall

7h00 - 8h00 Ladysmith Annual Dog-A-Thon

8h15 - 8h30 Mini Dog-A-Thon: Open for children 5 years and younger with dogs weighing less that 5 kg. - Route on the Agar Field.

8h30 - 8h45 Address by the Hon. Mayor of Ladysmith

9h00 - 9h45 Demonstrations: Working Hunting Dogs

10h00 - 11h30 Ladysmith Annual Dog Show



Entrance Fees: Dog-A-Thon R10,00 per adult R 5,00 per child Organized school groups R 2.00 per child Dog Show R 10,00 per entry Demonstration: Local Hunting Dog

Dog Show: The following categories will be judged 'Best Trick', 'Looks most like owner', &'Worst Mongrel', 'Cutest' and 'Best Groomed'. Judges will be made up from our sponsors, a local veterinarian and the Mayor of Ladysmith

Refreshments: Food stands will be erected and food such as 'Hot Dogs' and cool drinks will be for sale. Organized school groups participating in the Dog a Thon will receive a free snack and cool drink.

Prizes: Sponsors donated various prizes with include medals for participating in the Dog-A-Thon. Various prizes are available for the dog show and a lucky draw will be held with hampers.


INVITATION

The Ladysmith Animal Anti Cruelty League is excited about this event are confident that it will begin a new era of public awareness and participation to the benefit of all the animals that share our world.

All members of the public are invited to participate in the event with their dogs.

Members of the business community to challenge their employees and colleagues to support the day.

All schools are invited to participate. The schools that enter the largest number of learners will win a cash prize for their school.

Any form of support will be highly appreciated.
