Klip River Republic

By January 1847 only 40 of the original Voortrekker families were still living in Natal - owing to dissatisfaction and disappointment with British rule. On 7th January 1847 a formal treaty with Mpande was signed forming the Klip River Republic - the land between the Tugela and Buffalo Rivers. The purchase price was 1,000 rix dollars.

The new Republic ceased to exist after a few months when Sir Harry Smith assured the burghers that they would be protected by the government and the town of Ladysmith was founded in 1848 as a capital magistracy.
